Frankentries: Welding
I signed up for a sculpture class, thinking I’d be playing with clay. Listen… the 3D art world is super mysterious to us 2D artists. Especially the ones who are on their iPads and computers all day.
Picture this: I’m chatting with a really cool-looking art teacher who has on an apron filled with every tool you could imagine. They mention their class and say hey, it’s a really good time, you should join. So, I went to the front desk and signed up. The clues were there…
Clue #1: The apron full of tools
Clue #2: The metal and wood store suggestions on the class list
Clue #3: Merriam-Webster dictionary defines sculpture as the action or art of processing (as by carving, modeling, or welding) plastic or hard materials into works of art
Clue #4: Uh, duh!?!?!? Ceramics is clay…
So, anyway, after I signed up, I started looking at the class description and was a little concerned about what I had just done. To be fair, it didn’t explicitly say “metal work” or “welding”. But it was still obvious if I had done any sort of further reading. So, as you now know, I signed up for a super badass welding class. It was awesome!
Lesson: just sign up for things that sound even remotely interesting and see what happens. Or do further reading if you’re super concerned about it. I probably wouldn’t have signed up if I knew it was welding. That sounds so scary! Do the scary thing.
Without further ado, here are all the projects I created in that class <3
Project 1: Little Robot
Project 2: Armless T-Rex
Project 3: Abstract Piece
Project 4: Whatever This Is, Look at That Shiny Metal Grinding Work Though!
Project 5: Little Beetle 1!
Project 5: Little Beetle 2!
Project 5: Little Beetle 3!
Project 6: Big Beetle (He broke on my way home from class, which means it had bad welds. 😂 Oh well, I made it for the plot anyways)
My favorite part about class? Smacking a piece of metal with a hammer for 2 hours straight. Seriously. I loved it. I could think through all my anxieties from the day and literally hammer it out.
Special shout-out to the other 3 Little Beetles that didn’t get completed.
